National Academic Operations Manager

Job Purpose:

To oversee the setting up and ongoing management of an online learning unit within Vega. The candidate will work directly with our Central Academic Team and with external stakeholders that impact on the distance delivery of Vega. The candidate should be capable of running the academic operations specific to online delivery for Vega. Identify new offerings and opportunities that build on the growth of the distance offerings.

Education:

Preferably a postgraduate qualification but at least an initial qualification at degree level.  (A qualification or a commitment to completion of a qualification specifically in distance education would be an added advantage).

Functional Competencies:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English including the ability to communicate with a range of audiences in a way that is clear, concise, specific, accurate, and accessible to the target audience.

Computer literacy including but not limited to working on enterprise level systems and with document management and tracking.

Leadership, management and administration skills.

Conflict resolution, mediation and cooperative communication skills.

Interpersonal skills characterised by tact and diplomacy and an ongoing ability to participate effectively in a team that is spread across the country.

Capacity to get others to follow by example and the ability to manage matrix management and communication structures.

Attention to detail.

Proven ability to work constructively as part of a team, display initiative and work strategically and independently with limited supervision.

Proven record of managing projects to a successful conclusion - delivery against deadlines.

Able to acquire new skills to keep up with new technologies and or new knowledge areas within relevant disciplines.

Understanding of the regulatory environment in which The IIE operates (CHE, SAQA, DHET) particularly but not limited to the regulations and legislation associated with distance education.

Work Experience:

Not all of these are required, but will be preferable - the total skill set will be considered:

  • At least three years' experience in an academic management environment preferably at a higher education provider;
  • Supervisory or management experience of at least two years;
  • Some experience in the operations management side of distance/online education

Key Performance Area:

Establishing processes and best practices;

Planning and coordinating the rollout of each programme/course;

Efficient running of the academic operations for distance education qualifications and short courses;

Recruitment, training and management of a team (academic and operational) responsible for supporting distance learning students;

Manages the evaluation of distance learning support services with a direct focus on student throughput rates and student satisfaction;

Analyses academic results and in collaboration with the National Teaching and Learning Manager and designs interventions for modules/ programmes that are underperforming;

Support in the development and maintenance of systems and processes in co-operation and supporting distance education students;

Investigating improved systems and processes to support the fast tracking of the growth of distance offerings and recommending these as appropriate;

Accurate, efficient and effective tracking, management and reporting of delivery in all the above areas.
